October 2009

Next meeting will be held on:

October  13th ~ 6:30 p.m. at the PUD

Guest Speaker: Connie Simpson

Connie Simpson, a P.A.A. member off and on since the 1990's, was recently awarded an EDGE Grant through a Seattle nonprofit: Artist Trust.  As one of the fourteen artists chosen by a juried selection, Connie spent a week in Port Townsend at Fort Worden going to full-day classes where she heard and learned from various museum curators, gallery owners, marketing agents, grant writers, lawyers, and other speakers.  "They were amazing lessons!" Connie shared. "EDGE is a great resource there for all of us, and I want to tell my fellow artists about this and other Artist Trust opportunities."

The workshop provided in depth information on important topics for the working artist looking to expand their knowledge of the marketplace in order to advance professionally.  The teachers were professionals, mostly from the Seattle area, in various fields.  Gallery owners explained what they are looking for from artists, how to approach galleries, how galleries choose the art they select to sell. "You have to do your homework before approaching them." Connie mentioned.  "Know their roster of artists and whether your work fits in by visiting in person and checking out their websites."

At the beginning of the week the fourteen artists of various disciplines made a five- minute slide presentation of their work and submitted their portfolios. Then at the end of the week the group did a public presentation of the same material. "Every-one worked hard in the evenings to improve both their presentations and portfolios based on what we were learning.  It was amazing how much more professional the final performance was." Connie said. "However, the art is never critiqued. No one judges the art; only the presentation."

If you don't know Connie, she has a degree in art from Evergreen.  She went on to study at The Alexandria (Torpedo Factory) Art School in Virginia.  She was also an RN for many years at local hospitals including Mason General Hospital.  Connie enjoys creating sculptures, jewelry, ceramics, paintings, and screenplays.  Her recent script:  With New Angels Now was accepted this month to Francis Coppola's Zoetrope Script Contest.  Please join us at our next meeting in October to hear about Artist Trust opportunities and Connie Simpson's interesting happenings.

Call to Washington State Artists!  The City of Port Townsend seeks an individual artist, or team of artists, to create an art project within its refurbished downtown waterfront area.  This revitalized waterfront area, scheduled for completion in 2010, stretches from the new NW Maritime Center at Point Hudson to Quincy Street.  It will celebrate the intersection of the city's historic and commercial cityscape with accessible seascape and includes a waterfront esplanade, visitor plaza, and tourism infrastructure improvements.  Artistic enhancement of this space could take the form of a specific art project or it could also augment existing features or planned new additions or features.  We invite a broad interpretation of creativity.  The preliminary budget for artwork is $70,000 which has been allocated under the City's Percent for the Arts program.  How to apply: Please visit their website at www.cityofpt.us/callforartists for more detailed information, maps, visuals, and answers to possible questions. Project proposals are due October 14th with finalists to personally present their projects January 15, 2010. Final selection will be February 15th.

Meet Our Members

Hi There. My name is Trina Gustafson.  I'm a returning PAA member and your current Newsletter Editor, and I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the folks that don't know me and say hello to the folks that do.

Generally, Mason General Hospital is my home away from home.  My office resides just behind the art display for PAA members where I get to admire new and creative work each month.

To describe me simply, some people are driven to continually create by strong internal forces. It's something that just exists, and that's the basis for nearly every part of my life and everything touched within it.  Being around other creative people only fuels my pre-existing artistic energy, and learning new methods and skills provides just that many more outlets...because sometimes there just are not enough!

I'm so happy to be coming back to PAA, and I really look forward to visiting with you at the next meeting.  Until then, I hope you have a fun-filled day!

Thank you, Trina

ELECTIONS  IN  NOVEMBER!

Every organization owes its existence to its leadership.

Without the officers and board of directors the organization would be chaotic and quickly fall apart.  Many of our board members have served for 3 or more years and deserve a rest.  We are hoping that other members will step up and fill the vacancies that presently exist and also give those that have served faithfully for a long time a much needed break. If you are willing to serve please call Becky at 426-1842.  Thank you.
