Arline Fullerton has always enjoyed beautiful handmade baskets, but she spent many years raising children and couldn’t afford to buy any. Then, in 1973, she heard of a basket weaving class taught by Hazel Pete, a master basket weaver of the Chehalis tribe, and Arline took the class and has been making her own baskets ever since. Arline taught basic coil and twining classes at Olympic College in Shelton for a few years in the 80’s. She also has been a student of Northwest Indian culture and enjoys making more traditional native style baskets using cedar, sweet grass, cattails, raffia, bear grass, and an unidentified beach grass she picks near the Hoko River. Arline is an Aquatic Plant Biologist by trade, and is very busy during the summer with fieldwork. She makes baskets for friends, family and gifts and always seems to have one with her in some stage of incompleteness. Lately, Arline has been experimenting with adding feathers to the outside and rim of small baskets, and she has a rather extensive collection of books on native basketry and studies them for inspiration. Please join us at our next meeting for a fun basket weaving, story-telling experience. “It's a shock for me to go through and see all those years of painting my life, which is very personal for me. It's a very difficult thing for an artist to look back at his work.” Mason General Hospital Art Display
