Next meeting will be held on:Tuesday, March 16th - 6:30 p.m. at the PUDDean Gushee - Medical Doctor, Photographer Dean Gushee is a board certified emergency physician who practices at Mason General Hospital. Prior to becoming a physician, he completed a Bachelors Degree in biology and ecology. He then completed a Masters Degree in biological oceanography at Oregon State University. There he participated in numerous field studies that took him to sea on a fairly regular basis. His love of the ocean and marine ecology continues today. In addition to clinical work at Mason General, he travels with Lindblad and National Geographic expeditions serving as a physician who cares for crew, staff and guests. He was asked to participate as the physician for a global warming summit two years ago where approximately 100 policy makers, industrialists, scientists and naturalists and photographers traveled to the arctic to see firsthand the effects of global warming. Such influential people as President Jimmy Carter, Secretary of State Madeline Albright, Ted Turner, founders of Google and many others were aboard the National Geographic Endeavour as it traveled through the pack ice surrounding the high arctic island group of Svalbard, Norway, approximately 550 miles from the North Pole. This kind of access to remote places, spectacular scenery and animals that are unafraid of people can lead to terrific opportunities for photography. Combined with mentoring by some of the world’s greatest photographers of National Geographic, Dean has developed a deep interest in wildlife photography. Some of his images were requested by National Geographic when he captured never-before photographed images of a contest to the death between killer whales and a minke whale in the high arctic. Dr Gushee has had the great opportunity to visit and photograph in some of the world’s pristine wildlife sanctuaries where animals have no fear of humans. It is hard for most people to imagine such places where animals can be approached closely with no fear. He has captured images in the Galapagos Islands, Sea of Cortez, Antarctica, Honduras, Belize, and the high arctic of Norway and many others. He will travel to Mexico this spring to shoot whales and other wildlife. In the fall, he will board the National Geographic Explorer in Lisbon, Portugal to travel across the Atlantic Ocean to the very tip of Antarctica and then to the Falkland Islands and on to South Georgia. He believes that the best wildlife photographers are those who understand in detail, the behavior and biology of the animals that he is photographing. In that way, it is possible to anticipate that ‘great shot’ and creates images that respect an animal and its environment. See his images at www.wildimageplanet.com. Judge’s Statement:
I create art because I seek fulfillment in life, and I have a need to express my ideas and tell my visual story. When I am working I am energized by the opportunity to set my sense of seeing on a canvas for others to view. I love the smell of oil and the feel of buttery paint gliding over the canvas. I love the unexplained challenge of expressing my ideas simply and bold. I do what is an illusion of mastery to seek the truth about life.
I prepare my own materials. I like to be involved in the entire process. I build stretcher bars and I stretch and prime my own canvas. When the piece is completed I select and build the frame. I mix special mediums to make my oil paints buttery and free. I work wet into wet paint. I use photographs; I have taken, for reference and I draw on the canvas using a large brush so I can sculpt the shape and line. I work to produce a series of paintings like chapters in a book to complete an idea.
Recently I traveled to the Jersey coast and walked along the beach and the board walks. I was overwhelmed by the masses of people and the uninhibited behavior they expressed during their leisure time. The bizarre costumes they wore and their self-indulgent activities deeply resonated with the fiber of my work. Inspired and invigorated by a renewed sense of curiosity and awed by a community at play, I am now painting richly expressive people and their holiday places. I am exploring many new human expressions, shapes and colors. Once completed the images will combine to form a new look at the human experience.
